Construction and Contractors: All in a Day's Work

Can you imagine being a contractor? You start you morning by picking up supplies at the local building store. You drop off those supplies at one job site, and then you drive to another job site where you spend four hours mudding drywall. As that dries, you make calls to some of your suppliers, and then you meet with a client about a new job across town. As evening rolls in, you drive back to the other construction site and sand down some of that drywall. If this sound like a fun day to you, then you've stumbled on the right blog! This is a blog about construction, and you'll fit right in.

2 Reasons Why Adding On A Room To Your Home Is Not A Do-It-Yourself Project

Whether you have always felt that your house is too small or circumstances have made it necessary to expand, you may be planning on adding another room. If you enjoy and have a lot of experience completing do-it-yourself projects, you may be thinking about tackling the work yourself.

However, the work involved when adding a room to your home is a lot more complex and difficult than you may realize. There are a couple of reasons why you should forego your plans of doing the work yourself, and instead, hire a contractor to take care of the room addition for you.

1.  Project Will Require Building Permits and Inspections You Cannot Obtain on Your Own

One major reason why adding on a room to your home is not a job you should do yourself has to do with the legalities of it. More than likely, you may not be able to obtain the building permit required, especially if you have no formal training or licensure for certain aspects of the project.

And, even if you do get the permits, having the finished room inspected and deemed approved may be impossible, especially when it comes to the wiring and plumbing. However, a contractor will be able to obtain the permits and set up the inspections.

2.  Construction Will Require Multiple Skill Sets for Which You May Not Have Training or Experience

Another reason why it is better to hire a professional for your room addition project is that the construction of the room will require multiple skill sets to complete. For a room addition to be sound and safe, you would need to know not only carpentry but also framing, wiring, plumbing, and possibly concrete work.

However, even if the contractor does not have all of these skill sets, they will have the relationships required to subcontract to professionals in each of these fields. The contractor can then coordinate the planning and work with you to ensure that you get the room you desire.

When it comes to adding a room to your home, attempts to do it yourself will most likely be blocked when it comes time to acquire the permits and inspections required by your local ordinances. Even if you are able to get what you need, the construction itself will require multiple skillsets that require training, experience, and special licensure. Instead of trying to turn the project into a do-it-yourself job, contact a contractor who offers residential addition construction services so that they can help with the planning and process of building the room for you.
